Arvo Volmer - Conductor
Narek Hakhnazaryan - Cello

Sibelius - Tapiola
Tchaikovsky - Rococo Variations
Nielsen - Symphony No 4 Inextinguishable

Our former chief conductor Arvo Volmer returns with music that he loves – music overflowing with a wild, untamed spirit.

Young Armenian cellist Narek Hakhnazaryan, visiting Australia for the first time, opens up Tchaikovsky’s Rococo Variations. A simple, square melody – a throwback to the finesse and balance of music in Mozart’s day – is unfolded into a series of surprising and enchanting characters.

This is the sunny glade reached after a trek through the woods of Sibelius’s last great orchestral work, Tapiola.

Finally, be carried away by the powerful current of Carl Nielsen’s Fourth Symphony. Nielsen compared his job as the composer of this piece to that of an engineer having to deal with a flood. It’s unstoppable, thrilling, and ultimately uplifting.

As Nielsen said, “Music is life, and like it, inextinguishable.”
