Skalkottas : Greek Dance Schnittke: Moz-Art à la Haydn Haydn: Violin Concerto in C major Haydn: Symphony No 83 in G minor The Hen Alfred Schnittke brings a smile to your face with his musical game for two soloists and strings, where he cleverly and amusingly synthesized a teenage fragment of Mozart with a theme from Haydn’s Farewell Symphony. More tributes to Haydn to mark the 200 th anniversary of his death with his scintillating, rarelyheard Violin Concerto in C played by Sophie Rowell, First Violin of the acclaimed Australian String Quartet. The rollicking Paris Symphony, The Hen shows Haydn at the pinnacle of his genius.

Festival Theatre Saturday, 4 April 8pm Saturday, 4 April 2009 Anyone who has experienced Messiah will understand Handel’s heartfelt exclamation during its composition that ‘I think I did see all of heaven before me and even the great God himself.’ With its mighty choruses and timeless theme of divine love transfigured by suffering and sacrifice, no other work in western music has moved so many people of all faiths, or none, for more than two and a half centuries. For this performance, commemorating the 150 th anniversary of the work’s first performance in South Australia (the first orchestral performance given here), the ASO is joined by a leading Australian cast of singers and Handel expert Graham Abbott.
