The Adelaide Symphony Orchestra have just returned from their tour of the United States in January, playing at the Royce Hall, Los Angeles, as well as the famous Carnegie Hall in New York.
Their performance included the world premiere of Graeme Koehne’s Sleep of Reason, which featured the “luscious playing” of twin cellists Pei – Jee and Pei – Sian Ng. “To their brave credit, the Adelaide ensemble and Estonian chief conductor/music director Arvo Volmer used most of the program to expose new Australian music to an audience who hears very little of it”, Ginelle wrote.
In New York at Carnegie Hall the ASO shone alongside Australian artists such as David Campbell, Jimmy Barnes, Lior, Oliva Newton John and Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu. It was the orchestra’s performance with Yunupingu which The Australian Newspaper proclaimed to be ‘worth the price of admission alone’.
The performance, which also coincided with inauguration of US. President Barack Obama saw the orchestra give a moving tribute to the newly sworn in President with a performance of Aaron Copland’s Lincoln Portrait, which earnt a worthy standing ovation.
