Mahler was monumental!
Presented by Adelaide Festival and the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra
Adelaide Entertainment Centre
Maestro Arvo Volmer (pictured above left) led the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra and Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, eight soloists and up to 500 choristers from the Adelaide Festival Chorus - a combined choir from around Australia - to perform the spectacular Mahler 8 - Symphony of a Thousand.
Artistic Director Paul Grabowsky said "This special one-night-only performance is one of the ways we will pay tribute to the Adelaide Festival in its fiftieth anniversary year - and will be our epic finale for the 2010 Festival."
This important, history-making performance marks the 100th anniversary of Mahler's premiere performance of this choral symphony in Munich, Germany and 42 years since it was last performed in Adelaide at the 1968 Festival, it's Australian premiere performance.
The ASO's Chief Conductor, Arvo Volmer said Mahler attempted something truly remarkable in his Eighth Symphony that affected both its content and its overall structure.
"In this rarely performed symphony, Mahler boldly unifies the entire work through the expression of a personal philosophical ideal - in this case the redemptive power of human love" said Volmer.
"Mahler's Eighth is the grandest of all symphonies. As the Olympics are to sport, so is Mahler to symphonic music. The 120 minute work is so large that the Entertainment Centre is the only venue in Adelaide where it can be presented" said Volmer.
