The ASO's performance with Paolo Sebastian at the Adelaide Fashion Festival this year is our first foray into fashion, though it's not the first time fashion and orchestras have sat within the same sentence. Some of fashion's most iconic runway shows included performances by ensembles and orchestras. Read on to discover some of the very best.
1. Alexander McQueen
A string orchestra played Handel's Sarabande live during Alexander McQueen's Spring 2007 fashion show, which took place in the Cirque d'Hive, Paris. Watch it online here.
British Composer Ilan Eshkeri composed a soundtrack titled Reliquary for Burberry's Fall Winter 2016/2017 fashion show. It was performed live by the London Metropolitan Orchestra. Watch it online here.
3. Victoria's Secret
Andrea Bocelli sang Mascagni with a string orchestra at the first televised Victoria's Secret fashion show in 2001. The show was shot in Bryant Park, NY, and Bocelli and the orchestra performed from atop a balcony overlooking the runway. Watch it online here.
Karl Lagerfeld took Chanel's 2017/18 Métiers d'Art collection to the Elbphilharmonie in Lagerfeld’s hometown of Hamburg. The music was performed from the stage, played by Ensemble Resonanz, the resident ensemble of the Elbphilharmonie, under the direction of Oliver Coates. Watch it online here.
5. Moncler Grenoble
The stage of the New York's Hammerstein Ballroom transformed into a unique audio-visual experience for the Moncler Grenoble Fall/Winter 2014-15 show. Members of the ten-piece Pendulum Choir stood on small platforms and were strapped to the mechanisms around the torso, legs and feet as they sang an updated version of a traditional Alpine song. Behind them, sixty male and female choir members dressed stood in rectangular boxes stacked four levels high. Read more here. Watch it online here.
6. Dior Homme
At the Dior Homme Fall Winter 2015/2016 show, a live orchestra performed a symphonic interpretation of the music of French singer Koudlam. Watch it online here.
7. Paolo Sebastian
The Adelaide Symphony Orchestra will perform Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker at Paolo Sebastian's couture runway show this Wednesday at Adelaide Fashion Festival. Trust us, it's going to be just as iconic as Chanel. Tickets are still available.
