On Thursday 15 February the ASO rolled out its Encore in VR project at the Southern Yorke Peninsula Community Telecentre. In an ongoing demonstration of our close relationship with the Friends of the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra (FASO), three volunteers from FASO accompanied me to Yorketown for this exciting, successful event.

As I enter my third year leading the ASO’s Festival of Learning and Participation, it’s a great time to reflect on the role of the arts in education from a musical perspective. When I talk to musicians the world over, it’s clear that early exposure to music leads not only to a life-long love for the art form, it can also hold great influence over your choice of career. Use me as a case study; music has been my primary passion for as long as I can remember.

What orchestras arguably need most of all these days are skilled, talented and enthusiastic individuals who can bring the experience of orchestral music to young people. Oddly, they tend to be a small and rare bunch. This is because their abilities need to be spread so widely, across education, conducting, composing, and perhaps above all, communication.

The Adelaide Symphony Orchestra (ASO) has launched a piece filmed at its Classics Unwrapped series online via YouTube and Facebook 360, and now audiences can view the ASO in virtual reality from anywhere.
