Didy steps up to the podium!

After a fiercely contested bidding war at the ASO’s 80th Birthday Party in October last year, Didy McLaurin was the winner of a Conducting with Guy Noble experience.

This experience took place on Wednesday 5 April 2017. Didy rehearsed with the orchestra in the morning, before the big performance in the evening at the Adelaide Town Hall. It was a full house and many of Didy’s friends were in the audience (having booked out a large portion of the front row).

Why did you decide to bid for the Conducting with Guy Noble experience?

I thought it would be a fun thing to do, I knew that Guy had a great sense of humour. Maybe I had a secret desire to see just what it is like up there! I did wonder what on earth I had let myself in for when I awoke the next morning…

What was it like learning to conduct from Guy?

We had a few laughs and he told me to put some energy into it! He said I would be okay, it’s just a march – dom, dom, dom, dom etc.

Were you nervous before the performance?

I was extremely nervous and wondered how on earth I had got myself into this situation – what if I fell or tripped or made a complete idiot of myself? Waiting backstage was the worst part! But ASO staff Alex [Bassett] & Stevan [Pavlovic] tried their best to divert my thoughts and kept telling me all would be okay.

How did you find the experience up on stage?

Once I had my back to the audience and had to concentrate on the orchestra I felt a little more comfortable. In fact, I really enjoyed it! I was just worried when we were going to stop – I couldn’t quite remember how the piece ended so I was very pleased when they finished and I actually had my hands in the right position (sort of)! The percussionist [Gregory Rush] was terrific and gave me encouraging looks each time the cymbals came in, it really made me laugh.

What feedback have you received since the performance?

My new name amongst friends is Maestro McLaurin! They were very impressed that I had my own dressing room and received the beautiful bunch of Tynte flowers. Several friends have said they enjoyed the concert so much that they are going to book for the remainder of the Classics Unwrapped series. I am still getting comments from strangers who were there on the night and loved the whole episode.

Thank you to the ASO for the opportunity – although scary, it has been a lot of fun and I did have a lot of laughs.

The orchestra is the pinnacle of human community – a form where dozens of people work as one to create music that elevates us all. To match this, black tie, with elegant flashes of brilliance – a jewel or strip of precious metal at the neck – is the only option.
