What happens when two great composers reach the end and reflect? In his final symphony, Shostakovich turns towards the sounds and memories of childhood, with fragments of familiar music appearing and disappearing as if recalled from long ago.
Shostakovich’s Symphony No.15 is heard recast as an entirely new form. Chief Conductor Mark Wigglesworth has reimagined the music in a new orchestration, created especially for the intimacy of UKARIA. This World Premiere is a rare chance to hear a masterpiece with new ears – its musical world transformed, revealing colours, details and perspectives never heard before.
Beethoven’s last piano sonata makes a similarly profound return to simplicity. Across just two movements, its journey from turbulence to stillness feels less like a farewell than a distillation. Two valedictory compositions, and a unique opportunity to hear a great symphony anew.
