Artists
Jonathan Lo | Conductor
Jonathan Lo is Music Director and Chief Conductor of The Australian Ballet, a position he has held since 2023. Praised for his “fluidity and natural music‑making” that is both “technically impressive and passionately expressive,” as well as for his deep understanding of the relationship between music and movement, he is widely regarded as one of the leading conductors of today’s ballet and dance repertoire. Dance Europe has described him as “without doubt, the greatest ballet conductor we have.”
Equally at home in the concert hall, Jonathan has worked with many of the world’s leading orchestras in performances, broadcasts, and recordings, including the BBC Philharmonic, London Sinfonietta, Philharmonia Zurich, Tokyo City Philharmonic, Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra, Orchestra of St Luke’s, and the Gabrieli Consort. He was Principal Guest Conductor of the Xi’an Symphony Orchestra in China and Music Director of the Manchester Chamber Choir, with whom he served as Chorus Master for several BBC Proms.
Jonathan maintains a long‑standing relationship with The Royal Ballet, Covent Garden, where he has conducted numerous productions and international cinema broadcasts of cornerstone repertoire, as well as world premieres.
Born in Hong Kong and raised in the UK, Jonathan studied music at the University of Oxford before completing conducting studies at the Royal Northern College of Music. He was a member of the Jette Parker Young Artist Programme and a BBC Performing Arts Fellow.
