ASO Jam Sessions FAQs
Do you have questions about attending our ASO Jam Sessions? If you can’t find the answers you’re looking for below, please call us on 8233 6233 or contact us via email at learning@aso.com.au.
What can I expect?
Over the course of the sessions, you’ll collaborate with expert workshop facilitators to use music as a tool to connect with your community. Together, we’ll explore ways to express your identity both individually and as part of a group, creating a shared musical experience that fosters connection, creativity, and personal growth. This workshop is about more than just making music—it’s about building relationships, enhancing wellbeing, and celebrating who you are.
Facilitators will help participants create songs collaboratively throughout the session, you do not need to prepare songs to bring to the session.
Who is it for?
The workshops are for everyone! Whether you’ve never touched an instrument, are a seasoned musician, or fall somewhere in between, this project welcomes you. Young or old, it’s for people with a story to tell, and people who love to listen.
How much does it cost?
Participation is completely FREE for all attendees.
How long are workshops?
Each workshop runs for 2.5hrs, with a 15 min break at approximately the 1.5hr mark.
Do I need to register for workshops?
Yes! Our venues all have capacity limits so to be sure you don’t miss out on a place at your preferred time and location it is important to register your attendance by booking your spot online.

The facilitators will endeavour to cater to everyone’s learning needs. If you have a learning need or disability you would like us to be aware of, please notify us via email at learning@aso.com.au or call us on 8233 6233.
How many workshops should I attend?
Ideally, you come to each of the four workshops at your chosen venue over the year, as they are designed to build upon one another and provide a cohesive experience. The initial sessions will involve creating pieces, whereas the final sessions will focus on mastering them.
However, if you only wish to attend one or two workshops, or if you discover us later in the year, you are free to participate in whatever way suits you best. We welcome your involvement at any stage!
What if I can’t make it to the workshop?
We understand that life can be unpredictable. If you have booked a place and can no longer attend, please contact us on 8233 6233 or email us at learning@aso.com.au
Who will be running the workshops?
We will have two Workshop Facilitators leading each session, Julian Ferraretto & Dave McEvoy. There will also be ASO mentors to help guide you through the music.
What do I bring during workshops?
If you have an acoustic musical instrument, feel free to bring it; otherwise, just bring yourself. Don’t forget a water bottle for hydration. You are also welcome to bring a small snack to eat outside during the 15min break. We recommend minimising valuable or personal items, as we cannot assume responsibility for them.
What if I don’t have an instrument and would prefer not to sing?
We will have a small selection of handheld percussion instruments for you to borrow each session. However, you will be required to return these at the end of each session, and you may not receive the same instrument each week, depending on demand. We still encourage every participant to join in vocally where they can, no matter your skills!
What do I wear during workshops?
Wear whatever makes you comfortable.
I’m the parent of a child who is interested, what processes are in place?
All ASO staff on-site have a current WWCC.
Children aged 12-18 may attend alone with parent/guardian permission at the time of booking, however, any child under the age of 12 must be supervised by a parent or guardian. Please note that ASO staff cannot always be responsible for supervision.
We ask that you carefully consider your child’s involvement, and welcome parents to observe or join the workshops.
Photography
Participants are welcome to take non-flash photos during the session on a non-professional camera, such as a mobile phone.
