Get to know ASO Tutti Viola Martin Alexander

Do you come from a musical family? What sparked your passion for music and in particular the viola?

Actually, yes – I used to sing duets with my older brother for school competitions, but also my mum was my first piano teacher! I used to love spontaneously harmonising in church, which I learned was ‘singing the alto’. When mum undertook her music training, she had to have a second instrument, so when I said I also wanted to have a career in music, I confidently volunteered, ‘my second instrument will be whatever sings the alto!’

Who has most inspired you in your musical career?

My mum has always been a great support to me, as a kid and as an adult. The other inspiration has been my partner, Josh – not just because, as the ASO’s Principal Oboe, he’s a phenomenal musician, but his dedication and humility have been a constant in his music making.

How did you feel when you were offered a position with the ASO, and what excites you about your role with the orchestra?

It was a relief, to be honest! I’m very passionate about the way the orchestra engages in the community, so I’m excited to be able to spread some of my own knowledge and excitement about classical music.

What are some of the challenges of being a professional orchestral musician?

It can be hard to stay fit when we’re balancing rehearsals, performances and personal practice.

What do you get up to when you’re not on stage?

I try to go for a run a few times a week. I’m also an avid knitter since the first lockdown a few years ago, and it’s such a great meditative hobby (although not always super relaxing for my hands!)

Martin’s chair can be supported through our Musical Chairs program. If you would like to get to know him better, and get closer to the music, please contact Philanthropy Manager Lucy Eckermann on (08) 8233 6263 or EckermannL@aso.com.au
