Introducing Shuhei Lawson, ASO’s freshly appointed Tutti Cello! Congratulations Shuhei on your appointment, and welcome to the ASO. We spoke with Shuhei so you can get to know him better.
How did you come to be with the ASO, and do you have a favourite memory so far?
I auditioned for the ASO last November in 2023. I was coming to the end of my studies at ANAM in Melbourne, so I wanted to throw my hat in the ring and hope for the best. It was my first job audition and my first full time job, so it was a really big deal for me.
My favourite memory so far is definitely winning the job in November last year – I have never experienced feelings of such astonishment and happiness, and it was the best moment in my life so far.
What part of performing with an orchestra do you find most meaningful or important to you?
I love the sea of sound an orchestra can make. This is my first time working with an orchestra full time, so to be able to appreciate the other sections of the orchestra and their roles is so enjoyable.
Is there anything special about your instrument?
My cello is a modern instrument made in 2016 by Yanbing Chen. I flew to the USA with my mum to purchase it in 2016 and it’s helped me get to where I am today.
What is your favourite piece of classical music, and why?
Dvorak cello concerto – it encompasses the deepest emotions one can feel.
Who is a composer you would like to see more classical music fans appreciate?
I really enjoyed playing Jaakko Kuusisto’s music last year at ANAM. I performed his string quartet Play III, Op. 21. His music is introspective and colourful. I’d love for the ASO to play his music in future.
Do you enjoy playing any other genres of music besides classical?
The cello repertoire is lucky to have styles of music such as blues, rock, jazz etc. I love playing these pieces because they sometimes require you to perform the cello in unorthodox ways.
