Grainger Studio

Grainger Studio is the home of the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra and where weekly orchestral rehearsals take place for our 75 musicians.

UPark Topham Mall
Only 7 minutes walk from Grainger Studio. Exit the carpark via Topham Mall, head down Leigh Street and west down Hindley Street. Book online for $8 after 4pm (Mon – Fri) or for $7 on weekends.

Getting to the venue

Is there accessible car parking available?
No. However, for easy parking nearby, we recommend:

UPark Topham Mall
Only 7 minutes walk from Grainger Studio. Exit the carpark via Topham Mall, head down Leigh Street and west down Hindley Street. Book online for $8 after 4pm (Mon – Fri) or for $7 on weekends.

There are disabled bays on level 3, 4, 5 & 6 next to the lifts. A total of 8 casual bays.

There are also some reserved bays for monthly parkers, so casual parkers should not park in those.

Is there a designated drop off area?
There is a loading zone directly out the front.

Is the venue accessible by public transport?
Yes.

What is the terrain to the venue entrance like, are there any obstacles?
Large pavers on the footpath. Sometimes there can be dislodged pavers or missing pieces. Access with caution and care.

Is there signage or way-finding to look out for?
There are large light boxes with posters on either side of the front of our building, as well as large flag banners on the roof that can be seen from a distance. There is also a sign hanging in-front of the bright red doors that says ‘Adelaide Symphony Orchestra’ and our address.

Getting inside the venue

Are there steps or stairs at the entrance?
No to enter the building, but once inside there are 3 steps to the entry foyer, and then another 4 steps to access the main foyer.

Is there an accessible ramp to get inside?
No.

Is there an accessible life to get inside?
Once inside the entry, make an immediate right followed by a left towards the accessible lift. Direction signage is available. You will need to press the call button to have a Front of House attendant come to assist with the lift.

Are there any obstacles in the entry of the foyer?
Not in the entry itself other than some stairs (which can be avoided by the accessible lift). Once in the foyer, there are some chairs and pot plants around. These are kept to the sides of the foyer to allow for a obstacle-free journey to the Box Office desk, and to the Grainger Studio.

What is the terrain like getting inside?
The floor is made from ceramic tile in the entry. The floor in the foyer is carpeted. The floor in Grainger Studio is also carpeted.

Getting information and/or assistance inside the venue

Where is the Box Office located?
Directly down the middle from entry, to the left of the Grainger Studio doors.

Is there an information assistant available?
Yes, at Box Office/Front of House.

Where is First Aid located?
First Aid is located at Front of House.

Is there a communication board available?
No.

Is the venue a Companion Card affiliate?
Yes.

Getting to your seat

Are the doors throughout the venue and into the theatre open and wheelchair accessible?
Yes. We open both sides of the doors for concerts, and there is plenty space to navigate a wheelchair.

Is there fixed seating?
No, we can remove all our seats.

Is there accessible seating?
Yes, we can accommodate.

Is wheelchair hire available?
No.

Are there easy access seats?
Yes, we can accommodate.

Where are wheelchairs positioned for seating?
Wheelchair-accessible seats are usually on either side of the front of the bleachers so there is plenty of room, but can be adjusted with notice through the studio.

Getting to the bathroom

Does the venue have accessible toilets?
Yes, to the right of the studio doors in the foyer. It is an all gender, RH transfer accessible toilet.

Getting to a quiet space

Is there a quiet room available?
This depends on the performance, e.g if it is a Relaxed Performance, we will have quiet break out spaces available. If you think you may require a quiet room, please inform us upon booking.

Hearing

Is there an Auslan interpreter available?
Not unless this has been predetermined, e.g for a Relaxed Performance.

Does the venue offer Assistive Listening Systems?
No.

Vision

What is the lighting in the venue like?
The light in the foyer is fairly bright, however it is lit from a very high ceiling, is warm-toned, and disperses well. It is not as strong as fluorescents are. The lighting in the studio varies for each concert, but is relatively warm and also light from high above.

Does the venue use strobe lights?
No.

Is braille available, and if so, where and what for?
On the accessible toilet door.

Is large print signage or print media offered?
Upon request.

Do performances offer captioning (e.g closed or open captioning)?
No.

What are the viewing distances within seating sections?
The viewing distance changes per show. Some shows have the first row a meter and a bit from the orchestra, while others have a few meters gap to leave room for children and rugs in front of the chairs. Every show is tailored to the size of the orchestra.

Accessing Water and Food

Is drinking water available and where? Is it free of cost?
Yes, in the foyer to the right of the studio doors.

Is there food available for purchase?
No, but there are many cafés and restaurants nearby, including a convenience store two doors down to the right.

Assistance Animals

Does the venue have an area assistance animals can go for toileting?
No. Light Square is roughly a 10 minute walk from Grainger Studio to the West. Light Square has grass assistance animals can use for toileting.

Does the venue have water available for assistance animals?
Yes, speak to Front of House.

Did you know?

The former cinema (on the site of the current Grainger Studio) closed on 11 April 1991 with the movie Edward Scissorhands.

In 1994, the venue opened as the Meridian Time Zone Nightclub. The property was sold in 1999, and the Meridian Time Zone closed in May 2001. The site was taken over in October 2001 by Adelaide Symphony Orchestra as their permanent home, re-opening as the Grainger Studio.
