Dmitry Matvienko

Dmitry Matvienko is the winner of the 2021 edition of the prestigious Malko Competition for Young Conductors with First prize and Audience prize. Previously, he was awarded with the Critics and the Made in Italy prizes at the International Conducting Competition Guido Cantelli.

Born in Minsk, Dmitry Matvienko received his first music lessons at the age of six before undergoing a formal training as a chorister and chorus master. He studied choral conducting at the St. Petersburg Conservatoire and he was a member of the MusicAeterna Choir at the Perm Opera and Ballet Theatre under the artistic direction of Teodor Currentzis from 2012 to 2013. In the following years he studied conducting at the Moscow Conservatoire and attended master classes of Gennady Rozhdestvensky, Vladimir Jurowski, Teodor Currentzis and Vasily Petrenko.

In 2017, Dmitry became a member of the conductor internship programme of the National Philharmonic Orchestra of Russia (chief conductor Vladimir Spivakov). He assisted and prepared several programmes for chief conductor Vladimir Jurowski, Vasily Petrenko and Michail Jurowski with Svetlanov Symphony Orchestra and thanks to the intense and fruitful work with these two orchestras he conducted concerts at the Tchaikovsky Hall of the Moscow Philharmonie and at the Zaryadye Hall in Moscow. During the same year, Dmitry Matvienko was engaged by the Holland Festival in London as chorus master for the world premiere of Kourliandski’s Octavia. This new opera was staged by Boris Yukhananov, who then invited him to conduct the ambitiously crafted project Orphic Games. Punk-Macrame at the Stanislavsky Electrotheatre in Moscow in 2018. Then, he assisted Vladimir Jurowski for the world premiere of Vustin’s The Devil in Love at the Moscow’s Stanislavsky-Nemirovich-Danchenko Music Theatre and successfully conducted two performances.

While conducting concerts with the Svetlanov Symphony, the National Philharmonic of Russia, the New Russia State Symphony Orchestra (chief conductor Yuri Bashmet) and the Moscow Chamber Orchestra “Musica Viva”, Dmitry worked with the Radio and Television Symphony Orchestra in Minsk, and collaborates from time to time with the contemporary music ensemble “N’Caged” and various other Moscow and Russian regional symphony orchestras. On the operatic side he did revivals of Prince Igor, Faust, Iolanta, La Traviata, The Tsar’s Bride, The Firebird, and conducted Verdi’s Requiem at the National Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre of Belarus.

The 2021-2022 season includes major debuts: among them Orchestra del Teatro Carlo Felice Genova, Orchestre Philarmonique de Monte-Carlo, Orchestra Teatro Comunale Bologna, Orchestra Teatro Regio Torino, National Orchestra of Russia, Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, Tatar State Symphony Orchestra, Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, Sønderjyllands Symfoniorkester, Ulyanovsk State Symphony Orchestra. In Moscow’s Novaya Opera Theater Dmitry is doing a new production of Korngold’s Die tote Stadt, alternating on the podium with Valentin Uryupin. In Munich, where a new production of Shostakóvich’s The Nose is staged at the Bayerische Staatsoper, he is part of the artistic team assisting the music director Vladimir Jurowski.
