About
The ASO is thrilled to once again be part of the Adelaide Festival’s centrepiece opera and in 2022, Australia’s most celebrated international opera director returns! Barrie Kosky’s productions of Saul (2017) and The Magic Flute (2019) were adored by audiences, for his Festival trifecta, he will bring his startling vision to a work never before seen in Australia: Rimsky-Korsakov’s The Golden Cockerel.
You’ll fall in love with this richly melodic, kaleidoscopic work, seemingly tailor-designed for Kosky’s inimitable aesthetic. He draws on Goya and Beckett, Cervantes and Shakespeare in creating a haunting dreamscape where a mad King decides the future of the world according to his whim, his fear, his vanity and his sexual desire.
We are especially excited to be reunited with our former Music Director, Arvo Volmer for these performances. Together with him and a stunning cast, including the great Pavlo Hunka, Venera Gimadieva and Andrei Popov, we can’t wait bring to life the score which embodies the incredible orchestral genius of the composer.
The Golden Cockerel is a co-production of Festival d’Aix-en-Provence, Adelaide Festival, Opéra National de Lyon and Komische Oper Berlin in association with Adelaide Symphony Orchestra.
