About
It is easy to look through this brochure and see it as a list of pieces. But the musical experience that the ASO enables can’t be defined by the works themselves. In actual fact, none of these pieces really exist. Music is not even a thing! In material form, music is just a set of black and white instructions. It is only in the act of hearing music that music becomes alive. Just like love, or hate, or fear, music is the result of the feelings people have when engaged by it. It brings to mind the idea that the word ‘music’ can also be used as a verb. ‘To music’ unites everyone who experiences it. Whatever our role, ‘musicking’ acknowledges that we are all fundamental to the experience, whether playing or listening. You are as much part of the music as the notes themselves. It is the listeners that make music human.
A concert is not an objectified art form, nor is it a product delivered to consumers. It is a social relationship enacted by everyone present and the health of our society is profoundly enriched as a result. I hope you enjoy the concerts this year.
