Two extraordinary pieces look back at innocence, memory and what shapes us – one through darkness, the other through light.
Composed on the eve of the Second World War, Britten’s Sinfonia da Requiem is a profound expression of his opposition to war; a dark and powerful warning of the horrors that were about to engulf the planet. Timpani and bass drum unleash a world falling apart, before grief gives way to hope, and two lone clarinets bring the music to a final, comforting close.
Mahler’s Symphony No.4 turns towards the light. At its heart is a child’s picture of heaven. Sleigh bells twinkle, woodwinds dance and childlike wonder fill the music, culminating in the vision of paradise sung by angelic soprano Sofia Troncoso in a moment so peaceful it feels as though time itself has stood still.
