Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No.3 demands extraordinary virtuosity, stamina, and expression. Internationally acclaimed pianist Alexander Gavrylyuk takes on its soaring melodies and breathtaking intensity in a performance set to be a highlight of the season.
The evening also celebrates one of Australia’s best-loved composers, Elena Kats-Chernin, in her 70th birthday year with the World Premiere of Mitya-Rite a new work inspired by Shostakovich. That connection leads naturally to Shostakovich’s First Symphony – the astonishingly assured work of an 18-year-old composer already beginning to find the distinctive voice that would influence generations of composers to come.
Elena Kats-Chernin‘s Mitya-Rite is commissioned by Paolo Hooke. Its World Premiere is generously supported through the ASO Miriam Hyde Circle by the Hon Catherine Branson AC SC.
