Wide horizons, open skies, endless possibilities. Hushed strings form a soft blanket of sound, and the tender song of the cor anglais emerges as Dvořák’s From the New World sweeps us into the spirit of discovery, tinged with a yearning for home.

Venture into another new world with the World Premiere of Australian composer Paul Dean‘s Bassoon Concerto, performed by ASO Principal Bassoonist, Mark Gaydon. Here, the bassoon becomes a lone voice calling out from across the concert hall, questioning and persisting until the orchestra begins to listen. Witty and theatrical, it is a musical journey from isolation to finding the courage to be heard.

Lili Boulanger’s D’un soir triste takes us somewhere darker, with orchestral textures that gather and deepen before the final pulse.
