Citizens’ Orchestra 2024
The Citizens’ Orchestra returns in 2024 on an even bigger scale, as part of Floods of Fire. Create authentic connections, collaborate with your community, and be inspired.

Citizens’ Orchestra
After the resounding success of the 2023 Adelaide Festival opening, Citizens’ Orchestra returns!
Citizens’ Orchestra is a musical celebration born out of the Floods of Fire project, and represents the South Australian community and our stories. Citizens’ Orchestra is free for all participants!
We’re inviting all citizens to join this intercultural, intergenerational orchestra and chorus. It’s a platform that welcomes professional musicians, beginners, and everyone in between.
Through engaging workshops, participants will collaborate with Music Directors Tim Steiner and Ricardo Baptista, alongside ASO musicians to co-create music based on your stories.
Join the Citizens’ Orchestra, and take part in an inclusive, joyous and empowering musical experience.

Who is Citizens’ Orchestra for?
The Citizens’ Orchestra is for everyone! Whether you’ve never touched an instrument, are a seasoned musician, or fall somewhere in between, this project welcomes you. Young or old, it’s for people with a story to tell, and people who love to listen. In essence, the Citizens’ Orchestra is for YOU!
How much does it cost?
Participation in the Citizens’ Orchestra is completely FREE for all attendees.
Do I need to register for workshops?
Yes – Our venues all have capacity limits so to be sure you don’t miss out on a place at your preferred time and location it is important to register your attendance by booking your spot at the links above.
How many workshops should I attend?
During November, you only need to attend one workshop to get a taste of Citizens’ Orchestra.
If you decide to embark on this journey in 2024, we request your commitment of weekly sessions for 2-3 weeks leading up to the performance, plus one dress rehearsal and the grand performance itself.
What do I bring during the workshops?
If you have a musical instrument, feel free to bring it; otherwise, just bring yourself. Don’t forget a water bottle for hydration. We recommend minimizing valuable or personal items, as we cannot assume responsibility for them.
What do I wear during workshops?
Wear whatever makes you comfortable.
I’m the parent of a child who is part of the Citizens Orchestra, what processes are in place?
All ASO staff on-site have a current WWCC.
Children aged 12-18 may attend alone with parent/guardian permission at the time of booking, however, any child under the age of 12 must be supervised by a parent or guardian. Please note that due to the number of participants involved, ASO staff cannot always be responsible for supervision.
We ask that you carefully consider your child’s involvement, and welcome parents to observe or join in the workshops.
