Join us for our ever-popular annual Learning event, Big Rehearsals! During these sessions aspiring young players sit side-by-side with ASO musicians to rehearse and make memorable music together. Offering five different ensembles of varying levels, students are guaranteed to be challenged as they develop their musicality and orchestral playing skills. With Graham Abbott conducting, each session is sure to excite and inspire—an opportunity not to be missed.

Beginner Strings

AMEB Grade 0.5–1
Mon 14 August, 11am–12.30pm
Beginner Strings is for players just beginning their orchestral journey. It is advised that applicants should be able to work independently and have previous ensemble experience before applying for this session.

Junior Strings

AMEB Grade 1–3
Tue 15 August, 10.30am–12.30pm
The ever-popular Junior Strings has been a staple in the ASO Big Rehearsals. If you are a young string player who has ample ensemble experience and is wanting a challenge, come join the fun. You’ll be amazed at the results from just one session.

Intermediate Strings

AMEB Grade 3–4
Wed 16 August, 10.30am–12.30pm
Intermediate Strings is a new ensemble catering for players ready to take on more challenging repertoire. Immerse yourself in a string-focussed playing experience alongside your ASO mentors.

Intermediate Orchestra

AMEB Grade 4–5
Tue 15 August, 2–4.30pm
Guided by an ASO mentor, students will experience playing in a complete symphony orchestra for the first time. Take your musicianship to the next level as you learn the nuances of a professional rehearsal. All orchestral instruments welcome.

Advanced Orchestra

AMEB Grade 6+
Mon 14 August, 2–4.30pm
Advanced Orchestra participants have the rare opportunity to experience a professional rehearsal first hand, as they sit amongst ASO ranks. This session is designed to extend students and elevate their playing to a professional standard.

Teacher Professional Development

Cost
$30 per teacher.

Have you ever wondered how a professional conductor rehearses an orchestra? Come along and observe students rehearsing alongside the ASO under the baton of Graham Abbott. Places are strictly limited and are only available to people holding a current Teacher Registration Certificate or WWCC and Police Clearance.
